Hornsby Area Residents for Reconciliation

Project: Oral history of the Aboriginal people of Hornsby Shire

Project Description: Our project is the oral history of the Aboriginal people of the Hornsby Shire, through recorded interviews with local Aboriginal community representatives, chosen by those communities.

Throughout the process, local Aboriginal communities and interviewees will be consulted concerning the product i.e. the transcribed interviews and the booklet. This booklet will allow for the stories to be accessible to the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community. The interviews will be available on DVD and in printed form. These will be held at the Local Studies section of Hornsby Shire Library. The booklet [circa 50pp] will be available for dissemination to local organisations such as schools. The resource will also be available through websites (Hornsby Aboriginal Corporation, Hornsby Area Residents for Reconciliation).

North Illawarra Reconciliation and Treaty Group (NIRTG)

Project: SPATE's 10th Anniversary Concert and BBQ

Project Description: December 2010 will be SPATE’s 10th anniversary. This is a significant milestone for the SPATE camp which was established to highlight Koori concerns about the impacts of increased residential development on important Aboriginal cultural sites in the Sandon Point area.

For the 10th anniversary NIRTG and SPATE plan to put on an extra special concert event with guest musicians, speakers and performers. We expect to draw the biggest crowd we have ever had and will invite many of the Aboriginal elders and leaders who have supported the embassy since its inception.

Funds Granted: $3700

Parkes Reconciliation Group

Project: Cultural evening & Promotion materials

Project Description: The Parkes Reconciliation Group would like to provide an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together. A Cultural Evening, held in the library, will involve several speakers from the local area. Two local Aboriginal Wiradjuri teachers have agreed to talk about the language, its present status and their efforts to teach the language in local schools.

We would also like to develop a colourful brochure of good quality that conveys the concept of Reconciliation and also has details on how local people can be involved. We would also like to purchase wristbands that have “Parkes Reconciliation” written on them to reach a younger crowd. These wristbands are immensely popular in town, especially among Aboriginal youth, and the local reference will be a novelty.

Funds Granted: $1500

Project:Up In Flames 2010 - NAIDOC Week Concert and workshops

Project Description:Project established in response to community needs and wants. After consulting with local community, it was noted that youth were concerned about racial problems with in the community that led to anti-social behaviour. Youth noted they had one thing in common: ‘Their love of music’. Up in Flames is a project to engage the youth of Griffith in live music and music skill development while promoting reconciliation.

NSWRC would like to congratulate Pioneer Community Centre on becoming a Local Reconciliation Group and the first in Griffith.
