e-Newsletter January/February 2011

Dear Reconciliationist,

Welcome to 2011! After getting over binge consumption during the Christmas break, worrying about those effected by the multitude of natural disasters, and battling through heatwaves, we're happy to be back in your inbox's.

For those who missed it, Yabun was once again a fantastic day out for the whole community. Between the Kevin Cooke address by Linda Burney, memorable performances from Microwave Jenny and The Medics, the army of stall holders including NSWRC, Kristina Keneally dropping 3-pointers in the basketball comp and the pack of children running riot despite tempretures bearing resemblances to the suns surface - it's safe to say that there was something for everyone. Congratulations to Gadigal Information Services for putting on what's now a real highlight on the calendar.

Speaking of anniversaries, this Sunday it will be 3 years since Kevin Rudd's apology to the Stolen Generation. Being honest about history is such an important step in dealing with the issues of today - Julia Gillard delivered the Governments 3rd Close The Gap Report this week. Abbott called it 'embarrassing' and 'underwhelming'. What do you think?

In this issue you can get updates on this years Reconciliation Week Theme, and Schools Reconciliation Challenge, as well as the Small Grants program and events happening this weekend.

Reconciliation Week 2011 Theme

Drumroll please... The theme for Reconciliation Week 2011 is Let's Talk Recognition: You, Me, Us. Reconciliation Week provides an opportunity for all Australians to continue the dialogue around what we share and the disparities that we need to rectify.

Recognition is about acknowledging validity and this can happen on all levels. The proposition of changes to the Constitution is an important acknowledgement of the First Australians and the unique relationship that they have to this land. The tagline 'You, Me, Us' which is specific to NSW, refers to Reconciliation being a peoples movement and centred around building understanding at an individual level.

This Reconciliation Week we ask you to think about who deserves recognition in your community and why 'Us' is stronger than 'You and Me'.

Schools Reconciliation Challenge

For the second year in a row, we are running the Schools Reconciliation Challenge. It’s a chance for young people across NSW from years 5 to 10 to express themselves creatively, think about reconciliation and go in the running to win great prizes. To celebrate the launch of our community resource You Plus Me Equals Us, 2011 entrants will be responding to the theme “You, Me, Us” in any 2D medium, through works on paper or photography.

We’re excited to announce that the awards ceremony will be held at the Australian Museum to launch Reconciliation Week 2011, with the exhibition remaining on display until June 3rd. The competition is open to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal young people, who can enter either individually or as a class. Closing date is April 29th 2011.

The Competition will be opening on February 15th. All information will be available on our website on the same date.
