Online education kit

In December 2007 ReconciliACTIONnsw launched its Online Education Kit at www.reconciliaction.org.au/nsw. Guest speakers included Prof Larissa Behrendt from Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning and Wayne Costelloe from the Australian Education Union.

What's in the Kit? Information on Indigenous issues can often be hard to find and understand. The Online Education Kit provides information that is easy to understand for young people, ReconciliACTION members and the community.

There are also links and reviews to lots of different resources which other organisations have developed about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues. There are also tools to help young people get active in the struggle for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights, recognition, and reconciliation.

Freedom Ride 2005

February 2005 was the 40th anniversary of the 1965 'Freedom Ride', where a busload of Sydney university students led by Dr Kumantjayi (Charles) Perkins went on a journey across NSW to find out about the poor treatment of Aboriginal people in regional NSW. The 1965 Freedom Ride was a key event in Australia's social history.

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary ReconciliACTION filled up a bus with young people passionate about reconciliation and retraced the original 'Freedom Ride' journey, whilst making a documentary about the experience. Freedom Ride 2005 interviewed over 300 people living in regional NSW including many young people about race relations in their towns. The ride was a huge success but the journey is not yet over! ReconciliACTIONnsw is continuing to work to ensure that the stories collected on the ride have a chance to be heard. Some of the projects resulting from the ride include the development of the online Education Kit, a documentary to be screened in 2008 and several state-based campaigns.
